Ever Feel Like You’re Being Followed?

Posted in Blog, and Computers

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been getting bunches of notifications from the blog here that it’s being ‘followed’.

Yay me! (not really)

I don’t do any of this for any reason other than I like to write, and this 20-ish year log of my life is fun to look back at on occasion… Kinda like the family photo album, but with way more words.

Anyway, going and looking at the details of these followers reveals that most of the followers WordPress tells me about are just robo-blogs…

Robo-blogs are comprised of things an actual human posted somewhere – but gathered by a robot and reposted as SEO fodder for an unrelated website…

The game is simple – create a robot that scrapes and reposts other people’s tangentially related text and images on a blog that references your ‘brand’. The goal is for your robot to generate indexable content with SEO friendly keywords and machine-readable syntax to trick the search engine robots into boosting your website’s search ranking – without you having to do any of the actual creative work.

For bonus points you can have your robot add a generic one-line canned platitude that doesn’t actually reference the reposted content. This is to have your robot appear more human so that your robot doesn’t get flagged by the other robots as a robot…

“Wonderful article! We will be linking to this great article on our website. Keep up the good writing.”

That’s the Internet these days: A handful of humans generating data that robots scrape for other robots to turn into procedural content for other robots to index so that yet more robots get funneled to specific human data – where the process starts all over again.

Anyway, for the two of you who aren’t a script – Hi there! I’m Rihahn, and I post snippets of my day-to-day life for no real reason whatsoever.

And I’m not a robot…
